The Game Changers
The Game Changers is a vegan Netflix documentary that caused a bit of a ruckus with its claims that meat-based diets hamper physical strength and performance. It features UFC champion James Wilks and other top athletes including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, and Novak Djokovic who all eat plant-based diets.
Throughout the film, they cite several studies that seem to link animal foods to various health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. But it is important to note that many of these studies are observational, and therefore subject to a variety of limitations.
They also play the environmental card claiming that raising animal products is harmful to the environment while plant-based diets are sustainable. However, the demand for trendy “superfoods” like quinoa and avocado has led to shortages in places where these crops are grown and is causing forest clearing for more production.
The Firefighter’s Diet
Firefighters are at high risk for cancer and heart disease. Eating a healthy diet is a crucial part of firefighters’ ability to perform on the job and maintain good health.
But with busy shift schedules and limited dinner funds, many firefighters struggle to make nutritious choices. Their meals tend to be heavy in sugary drinks and fast food, which can contribute to weight gain and obesity, as well as increase their cardiovascular risks.
Despite these challenges, some firefighters are making changes that can improve their health and the health of their coworkers. Vegetarian and vegan diets have become surprisingly popular in some firehouses, cutting out meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. However, these diets can be restrictive and may result in nutritional deficiencies, especially if they exclude gluten-containing foods, which are often sources of essential nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, magnesium and protein.
